Algeria Rejects ‘French Ultimatums’, Vows Immediate Reciprocity on Mobility Restrictions

Algeria firmly opposes ultimatums and threats, asserting that it will implement “strict and immediate” reciprocity regarding any mobility restrictions enacted by France. This was detailed in a statement released on Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs.

“In the escalation and tensions that the French side has inflicted on relations between Algeria and France, Algeria has not initiated any rupture and has allowed the French side to assume full and sole responsibility”, says the press release.

“Algeria has maintained a position of calm, restraint, and moderation, aiming solely to exercise its rights and fulfill its obligations toward its citizens living in France. The legal framework provided by French law, bilateral agreements, European law, and international law supports Algeria, particularly regarding the consular protection of its nationals”, the source continues.

“It is the French side that has failed to meet its national and international obligations, as demonstrated by the abusive and arbitrary use of administrative decisions to expel Algerian nationals, thereby depriving them of the legal recourse guaranteed by French legislation,” the statement laments.

“Algeria remains vigilant regarding its international standing and is committed to upholding the entire legal framework governing mobility between Algeria and France, devoid of selectivity or distortion of its intended purposes, as mutually recognized by both nations,” it emphasizes.

“In this same spirit, Algeria categorically rejects ultimatums and threats. Furthermore, it will enforce strict and immediate reciprocity concerning all mobility restrictions between Algeria and France,” the statement asserts.

“Finally, any challenge to the 1968 Agreement, which has already been stripped of its substance, will compel Algeria to similarly reconsider other agreements and protocols of the same nature, without prejudice to additional measures dictated by its national interests,” the source assures.

“Thus, the vengeful and hateful far-right in France will have succeeded in its endeavor, effectively taking the Algerian-French relationship hostage and exploiting it for unscrupulous political purposes unworthy of such a relationship,” concludes the statement.
