The solar power plant project in the Gara Djebilet region of Tindouf province is progressing rapidly, as part of the national strategy to promote renewable energy and strengthen sustainable development in the country’s southern regions, said the provincial Director of Energy Mustapha Benabdelkader.
The construction works of the 200 Mega-Watt solar power plant is set to boost electricity supply for economic facilities, notably the strategically important Gara Djebilet mine.
Benabdelkader noted that the first phase of the project will be powered via two 30 kilo-volt lines connected to an already existing station, while awaiting the completion of the project that includes high-voltage lines with capacities ranging from 120 to 130 kilo-volts.
The official pointed out that the project is being executed at a strategic crossroads connecting the national highway to the Gara Djebilet base, alongside the construction of a major electricity distribution station, set to link the several industrial units planned for the region.
He highlighted the pivotal role of this plant in meeting the needs of the planned processing facilities, ensuring energy self-sufficiency for these installations and related infrastructure.
The plant will also supply electricity to the city of Tindouf, notably given the urban expansion of the province, and the high demand for electricity during summer, as well as supplying the border crossing, the free zone, and future developmental projects.
In this regard, the energy director said there will be a second plant based on gas turbines, along with another solar power plant with a total capacity of 360 mega-watts, which will cover the provincial energy needs and ensure a stable and sustainable supply for all the planned economic projects in the region.
He said the project aims to provide a clean and sustainable energy source that can ensure the smooth functioning of the mine’s core facilities, including the extraction and processing units, as well as supporting infrastructure, while reducing reliance on conventional power and lowering operational costs in the medium and long terms.
This project falls within the framework of the forward-looking vision and strategic planning of the country’s top authorities, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at the integration of renewable energy into major strategic projects, especially in areas with significant solar power potential like Tindouf.
This project also reflects the political commitment to strengthening the foundations of the national economy, enhancing renewable energy, and achieving a balance between economic development and environmental protection, as part of building a diverse and sustainable national economy.
