Algeria Prioritizes Heritage Preservation as Key to Cultural Diplomacy

TIPASA – Algerian Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, said on Monday in Tipasa that the protection and preservation of heritage are among the essential missions of the sector, for which heritage constitutes the “engine” of cultural diplomacy.
In a statement to the press following a working visit to Tipasa, the minister said that the visit resulted in “positive outcomes,” particularly after his meeting with local authorities and sector officials to discuss ways to protect and preserve the archaeological sites in the province.
He also assured that all reservations and issues hindering the implementation of some development and maintenance projects for archaeological sites have been resolved.
On this occasion, he outlined a roadmap aimed at protecting, preserving, and promoting Algerian cultural heritage, which he described as the “engine of cultural diplomacy” that will help promote Algeria as a destination.
The minister further reiterated “the sector’s readiness to submit progress reports to UNESCO on the conservation status of the seven sites listed as World Heritage by the organization, including the site of Tipasa, as stipulated by the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of World Heritage.”
