Algeria Presides Over UN Security Council Meeting on Syria’s Political and Humanitarian Crisis

NEW YORK (United Nations) — A meeting dedicated to the political and humanitarian situation in Syria opened Wednesday at the Security Council under Algeria’s presidency.

Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, spoke on behalf of the A3+ group (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Guyana), which presented once again its stance on the situation in Syria.

During the Security Council meeting held last December 17, the A3+ called for respect of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

the A3+ also urged Syrians to initiate a political process under United Nations auspices in order to achieve a new Syria that will unite all Syrians.

The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, provided on this occasion an update on the situation in Syria.
