Algeria: Minister Arkab to attend WFEG ministerial meeting in Rome
ALGIERS – The Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, will participate on Wednesday in Rome, Italy, in the ministerial meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), according to a Ministry statement released on Tuesday.
During this meeting, which will be held at the headquarters of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the minister will be accompanied by the Algerian Ambassador to Italy, the CEO of Sonelgaz Group, and the Commissioner for Nuclear Energy (COMENA), the same source added.
This high-level meeting, co-chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, will see the participation of numerous politicians, representatives from participating countries, scientists, researchers, executives from global energy companies, as well as entrepreneurs, investors, and others.
The goal of the meeting is “to exchange views on strategies adopted to accelerate the development and testing of fusion energy and to discuss priority issues related to political and financial frameworks, technological progress, commercialisation processes, and international cooperation to develop this promising technology to provide low-carbon energy needed to meet growing development demands.”
Several panels will be held on topics such as “Fusion Energy: Current State and Prospects” and “International Cooperation and Public-Private Partnerships: Paving the Way for Nuclear Fusion Energy.” The discussions will focus on the global fusion energy landscape, progress achieved in both the public and private sectors, as well as collaboration between countries and industries. Additionally, the panels will cover technological, scientific, and engineering advancements, along with the evolution of infrastructure in the field of fusion energy, according to the same source.
“The Italian government, which holds the G7 presidency in 2024, is focused on advancing fusion energy sciences and technologies, as well as addressing global challenges related to enhancing energy security and economic development. Italy is committed to advancing the fusion research agenda on the international stage,” concluded the statement.
