Algeria: FM Ahmed Attaf holds bilateral talks in New York

Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf held bilateral talks on Saturday in New York with several international counterparts as part of his participation in the high-level week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to a ministry statement.
FM Attaf met with Badr Abdelatty, the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs; Ayman Al-Safadi, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan; Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC); and Ramadan Mohamed Abdallah Gok, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan.
The meeting between Attaf and his Egyptian counterpart aimed to coordinate and tackle key issues on the General Assembly’s agenda, in addition to exploring ways to mobilise Arab efforts for further support of the Palestinian cause at the UN. The two ministers also discussed upcoming deadlines on both bilateral and continental fronts.
The Algerian minister reviewed developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and the Middle East with the Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister, especially amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the persistence of the Zionist occupation’s escalation on multiple fronts. The two sides discussed ways to secure more international support for the Palestinian cause during this General Assembly session, alongside prospects for strengthening Algerian-Jordanian relations ahead of upcoming bilateral meetings.
Additionally, FM Attaf’s meeting with the DRC Foreign Minister focused on examining the crisis in the eastern region of the country and efforts to resolve it peacefully within the framework of the Security Council’s approach. They also discussed prospects for enhancing bilateral cooperation, besides exchanging views on several issues addressed within the African Union (AU).
In his meeting with FM Ramadan Mohamed Abdallah Gok, FM Attaf reviewed the internal situation in South Sudan and the ways Algeria can assist the nation in maintaining peace and strengthening stability. This includes consolidating bilateral cooperation in human resource training and engaging in multilateral frameworks stemming from Algeria’s position as a member of the UN Security Council and the AU’s High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan (C5), the ministry concluded.
