Algeria, Chad Deepen Energy and Mining Cooperation Through Strategic Talks

The Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, alongside the Minister of Mines and Mining Industries, Mourad Hanifi, received on Tuesday the Chadian Minister of Mines, Petroleum, and Geology, Fatima Haram Acyl, to discuss ways to boost bilateral cooperation, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Hydrocarbons.
The meeting falls within the framework of bolstering cooperation between Algeria and Chad and sustaining the momentum characterizing bilateral relations, notably amid the convening of the Fourth Session of the Algerian-Chadian Joint Commission in Algiers.
During the meeting, held in the presence of the Secretary of State to the Minister of Mines and Mining Industries, Karima Bakir Tafer, both sides explored “prospects for expanding the hydrocarbons partnership within a sustained strategic vision, reaffirming the importance of previous agreements and the need to continue developing cooperation across various stages of the hydrocarbons value chain, including exploration, production, transportation, refining, petrochemicals, and the marketing of petroleum products and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).” Discussions also addressed partnership prospects between the Sonatrach Group and Chadian companies, support for energy infrastructure development projects in Chad, and the importance of training and capacity-building. This includes the transfer of Algerian expertise through the Algerian Petroleum Institute (IAP) to strengthen Chadian professionals in the management and organization of the hydrocarbons sector.
Regarding the mining sector, the two parties discussed ways to foster cooperation in the exploitation and processing of mineral resources, geological research and mapping, as well as the exchange of expertise concerning administrative regulations and the legal framework governing mining activities.
The meeting forms part of ongoing consultations and follows the discussions held during Algeria’s participation in the 2026 SIMECA Chad Exhibition, where both sides reiterated their shared commitment to bolster bilateral partnerships, the same source added.
The meeting reflects “the deep-rooted fraternal ties and historical bonds linking the two countries, grounded in trust, solidarity, and mutual interests, and affirms a shared determination to elevate bilateral cooperation to higher levels in service of development and the promotion of South-South cooperation,” the statement concluded.
