Algeria and Somalia Establish Joint Governmental Committee and Political Consultation Mechanism

ALGIERS – Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received on Sunday the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, who is on an official visit to Algeria, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The two ministers held extensive talks with the participation of members of both countries’ delegations, the statement said, adding that the discussions focused on means of consolidating bilateral ties and bolstering coordination between the two sides regarding regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The meeting also served as an opportunity to acknowledge the significant strides made by the State of Somalia in rebuilding strong and inclusive national institutions. It further reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting the efforts of the Somali leadership aimed at strengthening the foundations of security, stability, and development — both on a bilateral level and through Algeria’s dual position in the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council, the source said.

At the bilateral level, both parties agreed to reinforce the institutional framework of cooperation between the two countries and to enhance the legal foundation of their bilateral relations. This was reflected in the signing of three legal instruments by the two ministers, aimed at establishing a joint governmental committee, creating a mechanism for political consultations, and promoting cooperation in the training of diplomats.

Regarding multilateral cooperation, the discussions reaffirmed the two sides’ commitment to close coordination during their current terms on the United Nations Security Council. This commitment is dedicated to serving Arab causes—chiefly the Palestinian issue—promoting the priorities of the African continent across various sectors, and supporting development and stability at the regional level in both the Horn of Africa and the Sahel-Saharan regions, the statement concluded.
