African Youth Games U17: Algeria ranks second with 101 medals

Algeria ranked second at the African Youth Games U17 held in Angola, with student athletes winning 101 medals, the Ministry of National Education announced Sunday. On this occasion, National Education Minister Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui congratulated the medal-winning students who brought honor to Algeria through their ‘outstanding performance’ at the U17 African Youth Games, held from December 10-20.

The Minister praised the impressive results achieved by the students, securing Algeria’s second-place continental ranking just behind South Africa with 101 medals, only five medals shy of first place, a performance “‘reflecting the high caliber of participating students and their excellent preparation.” The medal haul comprised 39 gold, 26 silver, and 36 bronze medals, “a remarkable achievement demonstrating the Algerian education system’s capacity to balance academic success with athletic excellence, and showcasing students’ patriotic spirit, discipline, determination, and resolve to fly the national flag at continental competitions.”

Saadaoui underlined that this success aligns with “the State’s strategic commitment to supporting and developing promising talent, reflecting President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s particular emphasis on advancing school sports and fostering student excellence as fundamental pillars for building a strong, confident, and prosperous Algeria,” the statement added.
