Africa–Nordic Meeting Urges UN Reform, AU–UN Cooperation

The Algerian Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of African Affairs, Selma Bakhta Mansouri, co-chaired with Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, a special session on strengthening the multilateral system in addressing global peace and security issues, as part of the 22nd Africa-Nordic Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday.

“During this session, it was underlined that reform of the United Nations Security Council is an urgent priority to ensure equitable and permanent representation for Africa and to address the historical exclusion it has suffered, notably through the completion of the decolonization process on the continent,” the statement said.

The meeting also stressed “the importance of activating UN Security Council Resolution 2719 on the financing of peace support operations led by the African Union (AU), and the need for support from partners, particularly Nordic countries, to make it a practical tool to strengthen complementarity between the AU and the UN and to promote African solutions to African problems,” it added.
