World Para Powerlifting Championships: Algeria represented by four athletes in Cairo

Four Algerian para-powerlifting athletes, including one woman, are in Cairo to represent Algeria at the 2025 World Para-Powerlifting Championships, scheduled from October 10 to 18 in Egypt, according to the Algerian Handisport Federation (FAH).

The national team, coached by Mohamed Salaheddine Benatta and his assistant Habib Belhaou, includes Hocine Bettir (-65 kg), Chems Eddine Boudra (-49 kg), Radhouane Sedjerari (-65 kg) and Sabrina Moussaoui (-45 kg).

The Cairo event follows three World Cup stages that offered qualification points for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games, in addition to world titles and medals.

A total of 537 elite athletes and 119 juniors from 18 countries are taking part, including several African, Paralympic, and world champions.

The four Algerian representatives aim to continue their strong performances after all four won medals at the World Cup in Santiago last August.

In Santiago, Hocine Bettir won gold in the -65 kg category by lifting 193 kg, ranking 4th overall with a total of 378 kg after missing a 200 kg attempt.

Junior lifter Chems Eddine Boudra also took gold in the -49 kg class with a combined 240 kg, adding silver for his best lift of 85 kg, ranking 5th overall among seniors.

Radhouane Sedjerari, another junior (-65 kg), claimed two silver medals — one for the best lift (75 kg) and one for total (210 kg) — finishing 8th among seniors.

Sabrina Moussaoui (-45 kg) won bronze for a total lift of 145 kg and placed 4th for her best lift (75 kg).

In her category, Brazil’s Brenda De Souza won two gold medals (95 kg best lift, 188 kg total), while Venezuela’s Dilmary Perez took silver (85 kg, 162 kg) and Cuba’s Amalia Jimenez claimed bronze for best lift (83 kg).

According to the official schedule published by the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA), Algerian athletes will begin competing Thursday afternoon.

  • Chems Eddine Boudra will face 16 competitors in the -49 kg class.
  • Radhouane Sedjerari will compete against nine in the -65 kg junior category.
  • Hocine Bettir (-65 kg) and Sabrina Moussaoui (-45 kg) will compete in the elite division against 36 and 20 athletes respectively.
