USM Algiers Overcome Hostile Ordeal in Morocco to Reach CAF Confederation Cup Final

USM Algiers secured a hard-fought qualification for the final of the CAF Confederation Cup after a tense 1-1 draw against Olympique Club Safi in the return leg of their semi-final clash. However, the sporting achievement was overshadowed by a troubling pre-match ordeal, as USMA players were subjected to harassment and provocation following a pitch invasion by local supporters. The chaotic scenes forced the Algerian side to retreat hastily to the dressing rooms, where they remained until order was restored, delaying kickoff by nearly 90 minutes.
Despite the hostile atmosphere, the players of USM Alger demonstrated resilience once the match finally began. Goalkeeper Oussama Benbot delivered an outstanding performance, denying multiple attempts from the Moroccan side in the early stages. While Safi applied pressure from the outset, USMA gradually found their footing, with Ivorian forward Kamagaté creating the most dangerous chances, although he was unable to convert. The breakthrough came just before halftime when Ahmed Khaldi calmly converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review.
In the second half, USMA maintained their composure and attacking intent, even as Safi pushed for an equalizer. The Moroccan side eventually leveled through Senegalese striker Moussa Koné in the 75th minute, but the Algerian club held firm until the final whistle to secure qualification. The 2023 champions will now face Zamalek SC in the final, after the Egyptian side eliminated CR Belouizdad. The two-legged final is scheduled for May 9 and 16, with USM Algiers hosting the first leg before traveling to Cairo for the decisive return.
