UNSC: A3+ Urge International Community to Support Political Process in Syria

The A3+ group at the United Nations Security Council (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone + Guyana) on Thursday called on the international community and the UN to support the political process in Syria, while condemning ongoing Zionist attacks against the country.

“The international community, and the UN in particular, have a crucial role to play in supporting Syria during its transition. The A3+ urge constructive and coordinated engagement between the UN and the Syrian authorities to achieve this goal,” said Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, speaking on behalf of the group.

“We reiterate the importance of an inclusive political process led by and for Syrians. It is essential that the Syrians themselves determine the future of their country,” Bendjama stressed during a Security Council meeting devoted to the situation in Syria.

He emphasized the importance of holding “inclusive” legislative elections in Syria, which should be “meticulously organized to ensure their credibility and legitimacy.”

The A3+ also called for a ceasefire across Syrian territory. “Silencing the guns and encouraging dialogue among all Syrians is essential for the country’s stability,” the group underlined, adding that “weapons must be under the exclusive authority of the Syrian state.”

Bendjama warned that “continued confrontation risks fueling instability and creating fertile ground for the resurgence of terrorism.”

The A3+ further urged “all regional and international actors to refrain from actions likely to destabilize the country,” denouncing in particular the repeated attacks carried out by the Zionist entity against Syrian territory.

The group firmly condemned the Zionist military operations, describing them as “a flagrant violation of international law, including Article 2 of the United Nations Charter.”

They also demanded that the Zionist entity respect the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria, while recalling that the occupied Golan Heights is Syrian territory that must be evacuated without delay.

On another front, the A3+ noted that humanitarian needs in Syria remain “immense” and that the lifting of sanctions against the country, while commendable, remains insufficient in addressing the suffering of the Syrian people.

The group called on donors to honor their commitments and urged the international community to provide Syria with “significant and lasting” humanitarian aid.
