UN Warns of Escalating War and Famine Risk in Sudan

The United Nations’ human rights chief, Volker Turk, issued a stark warning on Thursday about the worsening crisis in Sudan, cautioning that the country is on the brink of further chaos and large-scale starvation. Speaking at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Turk emphasized the escalating violence and humanitarian disaster unfolding in the war-torn nation.
“Sudan is a powder keg, on the verge of a further explosion into chaos, and at increasing risk of atrocity crimes and mass deaths from famine,” Turk stated. His remarks highlighted the deteriorating situation, where ongoing conflict has severely disrupted food supplies and humanitarian aid efforts.
With the war showing no signs of de-escalation, Turk stressed that the international community must act urgently to prevent further atrocities and mass suffering. His warning comes as fears grow over the humanitarian catastrophe facing millions of Sudanese civilians caught in the crossfire of the conflict.
