Poland Hails Algeria as Its Key African Partner, Seeks to Deepen Strategic Cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, Radoslaw Sikorski, affirmed on Wednesday that Algeria is his country’s most important partner in Africa, expressing Poland’s desire to foster bilateral ties.

In a statement to the press following the audience granted to him and his accompanying delegation by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Sikorski stated that the meeting provided an opportunity to “strengthen relations between Poland and Algeria,” highlighting his country’s aspiration to advance them. He also highlighted the ongoing dialogue with the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, as a continuation of talks launched in Warsaw in June 2024, adding that this visit is the first by a Polish foreign minister to Algeria since 2017.

Sikorski described Algeria as an important partner for Poland, citing its geographic size and its role as a major energy producer. He noted that Algeria is Poland’s leading economic partner in North Africa, with bilateral trade reaching USD 1 billion in 2025. According to Polish data, Algerian exports to Poland doubled to approximately USD 300 million during the same period.

He emphasized that the main objective of his visit was to review and strengthen bilateral relations, particularly economic cooperation. Accompanied by the Deputy Minister of State Assets and senior representatives of major Polish companies, including Azoty and Orlen, Sikorski stated that Poland aims to increase the participation of its companies, investors, and exporters in Algeria, particularly in the energy, renewable energy, agriculture, and agri-food sectors.

He also noted the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Polish Diplomatic Academy and Algeria’s Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations (IDRI) to promote the exchange of expertise and knowledge. Furthermore, both sides agreed to organize trade missions, cultural initiatives, and academic exchanges, while a letter of intent was signed to foster bilateral cooperation.

On international issues, discussions addressed global security developments, including the situations in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Sahel, with an emphasis on stability and respect for international law. Regarding the Sahel, Sikorski expressed concern over political instability, terrorism, irregular migration, and the presence of foreign mercenaries, reaffirming Poland’s solidarity with Algeria in addressing these challenges.

“I look forward to continuing our cooperation in the future, as Poland and Algeria are rediscovering each other, and I have high hopes for what we can achieve together,” Sikorski concluded.
