Morocco at the Center of Drug Trafficking Networks: Spanish Authorities Uncover Smuggling Operation

Morocco continues to solidify its position as a key hub in global drug trafficking networks. Spanish authorities announced the dismantling of a criminal organization involved in smuggling banned pharmaceuticals to Morocco, where they are transformed into a highly dangerous drug, local media reported on Tuesday.
Pedro Fernández, the Spanish government representative in Andalusia, revealed that the network was responsible for stockpiling medication containing the active ingredient benzodiazepine. These pills were exported to Morocco, where they were combined with hashish or resin (used in pharmaceutical preparations) to create a narcotic locally known as “qarqoubi.” This drug is considered one of the most harmful substances affecting the mental and physical health of Moroccan youth.
Spanish media highlighted that the operation, carried out by Spain’s national police in the southern province of Jaén, underscored Morocco’s role as both a consumer and redistributor of prohibited narcotics, further exacerbating the region’s drug crisis.
During the operation, codenamed “La Rosita,” Spanish authorities arrested nine individuals aged between 18 and 63, including a doctor from a health center in Linares. Investigations began mid-last year when police discovered 56 boxes of the drug sold at a single pharmacy. Tracing the transactions led to connections with a single family. In a significant raid, authorities seized 2,160 pills prescribed by the detained doctor, along with €18,000 in cash, shedding light on the scale and economic dimensions of the criminal enterprise.
Qarqoubi pills have become one of the most commonly abused drugs in Morocco due to their low cost and ease of smuggling compared to other narcotics.
Morocco’s role in this illicit trade is bolstered by complex smuggling networks that operate through its ports and land borders, fueled by lax security measures and corruption across multiple sectors.
Estimates suggest Morocco serves not only as a recipient of these substances but also as a critical transit point for drug trafficking routes to Europe and Africa, cementing its role as a key player in the global drug trade.
