Iran Ready to Assure US It Will Not Pursue Nuclear Weapons, Araghchi Says

Iran is prepared to provide guarantees to US negotiators that it will not pursue nuclear weapons, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, describing such assurances as “achievable” if both sides demonstrate goodwill. He emphasized that any potential agreement must safeguard Iran’s right to the peaceful use of nuclear technology, including for electricity generation, medical production, and agricultural purposes.
Araghchi reiterated that Iran’s uranium enrichment program is strictly peaceful, explaining that enrichment levels are determined by civilian needs. He stressed that Tehran will not accept demands for zero enrichment, while maintaining that its nuclear activities remain focused on non-military objectives. The minister also underlined that “there is no solution but a diplomatic solution,” pointing to last year’s bombing attack as a factor that has deepened Iran’s mistrust of the United States.
Recalling that Iran was engaged in negotiations with Washington last June when the attack occurred, Araghchi said the incident undermined confidence in the process. He affirmed that Iran remains prepared for a diplomatic resolution, but warned that the country is also ready to defend itself against any new aggression. Following the February 6 talks in Muscat with US representatives, he reiterated Tehran’s commitment to diplomacy while insisting on preserving its nuclear rights.
