Ilkay Gundogan Returns to Manchester City from Barcelona

Ilkay Gundogan rejoined Manchester City from Barcelona on Friday, calling it a return to the “best club in the world.”

During his first spell at City from 2016 to 2023, Gundogan won five Premier League titles and the Champions League among 12 major trophies. He left City last year to join Barcelona but reportedly agreed to rescind his contract after just one season to facilitate a return to the Etihad on a one-year deal.

“I’m incredibly happy,” said Gundogan. “Happy to see the teammates, the staff, people that over seven years I had an amazing time with, a very successful time with. When you leave this place like I did last year, you start to appreciate the place even more.”

Gundogan’s return is timely for City following Julian Alvarez’s departure to Atletico Madrid for up to 95 million euros ($104 million).

City boss Pep Guardiola expressed surprise at Gundogan’s return, saying, “Most of the time the managers say until the transfer window finishes anything can happen and this is the real proof.”

In his sole season in Spain, Gundogan scored five goals and provided 14 assists, but Barca failed to win a trophy. Guardiola added, “We didn’t have any doubts when the possibility was open and delighted he is back.”

Gundogan was Guardiola’s first signing in 2016 and made 304 appearances, scoring 60 goals. He will provide experience and depth as City aims for a fifth consecutive Premier League title.

“He doesn’t come here to retire or to remember the good memories we had,” said Guardiola. “Now it is time to put shoes on and play your best.”

Gundogan is City’s second signing of the transfer window, following Brazilian winger Savinho. City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain praised Gundogan, saying, “His dedication to football and his approach to every single training session is something special.”

Gundogan could be included in the City squad for Saturday’s match against Ipswich, with Spanish midfielder Rodri still recovering from an injury he suffered in the Euro 2024 final.
