ALGIERS, September 5, 2025 – he Algerian Acting Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, appointed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to inaugurate the Global Africa Diaspora Day at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center as part of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), emphasized the crucial role that diasporas play in the continent’s development, reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to its national community abroad.
Addressing high-ranking African officials and leaders of African organizations, Ghrieb noted that the President has consistently prioritized the national community overseas, providing it with dedicated attention. He highlighted that this strong bond has been fortified by significant historical events in the country, which have deepened the sacred unity between the diaspora and their homeland.
For Ghrieb, this gathering represents an opportunity to rekindle the spiritual and emotional ties between African diasporas and their countries of origin. It serves as a perfect platform to “assert the substantial contributions of African diasporas and individuals of African descent to the continent’s development, as well as their vital role in nurturing enduring connections across generations.”
“This intimate connection, which our highest state authorities tirelessly strive to strengthen, holds immense significance today, especially with the upcoming commemoration of the 64th anniversary of National Migration Day, celebrated annually on October 17,” he remarked.
He added that this significant historical milestone embodies the sacrifices made by migrants for independence and provides a moment to reflect on the historical role of African diasporas in resisting colonization, combating racial discrimination and apartheid, and opposing all forms of racial persecution, slavery, and forced exile.
In this context, he recalled the President’s decision in 2021 to erect a mural in Algeria honoring their memory and acknowledging their sacrifices, which reflects “the commitment of the country’s leadership to preserve this legacy and support the children of Algeria wherever they may reside.”
Ghrieb asserted that the dedication of African diasporas to contribute to the liberation process of our continent continues today in new ways, leveraging their expertise, skills, and diverse resources.
On this occasion, he reminded attendees that Algeria is among the member states on the High-Level Committee responsible for implementing the “Decade of African Roots and Diasporas,” adopted by the African Union for the period 2021-2031.
Reaffirming Algeria’s support for the African Union’s essential role as a coordinating center for all diaspora initiatives across the continent, the Acting Prime Minister stressed that “Algeria is fully prepared to actively contribute to accelerating the implementation of joint projects related to the diaspora.”
As the continent prepares to host the “9th Pan-African Congress” next December in Lomé, Togo, Ghrieb underscored the “urgent need—now more than ever—to intensify efforts to mobilize the energies of African diasporas, leverage their skills and expertise, and strengthen unity, solidarity, and cohesion across the continent. This is crucial for achieving integrated and comprehensive development with the support of diasporas and people of African descent.”
According to the Acting Prime Minister, the African diaspora today represents “a significant economic, social, political, and cultural force, capable of making an increasingly substantial contribution to the prosperity and development of the continent.” He noted that the upcoming meeting will provide an opportunity to explore ways for this diaspora to promote the continent internationally and work toward effecting a profound change in the narrative surrounding African diasporas.
