Guinea-Bissau’s President Embalo Announces Re-Election Bid

Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo has announced his candidacy for a second term in the country’s presidential election, set for November 30, according to local media reports on Tuesday.
“I will be a candidate, without a doubt, and I will win in the first round,” Embalo declared.
On September 11, 2024, Embalo had stated that he did not intend to seek re-election at the end of his current term. His announcement had surprised supporters, who had already formed an initiative group to back his candidacy in the upcoming election.
Guinea-Bissau’s last presidential election took place in December 2019, with Embalo emerging victorious after a second-round vote.
