European Leaders Reject Trump-Putin Approach, Demand Role in Ukraine Talks

The phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has triggered strong reactions from European politicians, who emphasized the importance of including Ukraine and Europe in any negotiations. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy shared a joint statement from several European states, stressing that “our shared objectives should be to put Ukraine in a position of strength.” Similarly, UK Defense Secretary John Healey insisted that no peace talks should happen “about Ukraine without Ukraine.”
German officials also expressed concerns, with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius calling it “regrettable” that the Trump administration appeared to make “concessions” to Russia. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock echoed the sentiment, stating that “peace can only be achieved together—with Ukraine and with the Europeans.” Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged a collective effort between Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S. to work toward peace.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur both highlighted Europe’s investment in Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction, stressing that European nations must be involved in any resolution. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reinforced the alliance’s commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s position, calling for increased defense production among member states.
