Borrell Warns EU Risks Becoming ‘America’s Vassal’ Under Trump-Aligned Strategy

Former EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has issued a stark warning about Europe’s declining global relevance, saying the bloc has weakened itself by conceding too much to US President Donald Trump on defense and trade while sidelining itself in efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis. According to Borrell, the EU now appears “dangerously fragmented and weak, stuck in a hostile internal and external environment.”

With just 5% of the world’s population and a widening economic gap compared to other powers, Europe faces a “real risk of becoming America’s vassal,” Borrell cautioned. He admitted that the EU’s role on the world stage has been undermined by a loss of unity and credibility, leaving it unable to shape major geopolitical outcomes.

Borrell claimed that decision-making in the European Council and Commission is dominated by Trump sympathizers and staunch Atlanticists, whose strategy revolves around flattering and appeasing Washington in the hopes of limiting damage. Instead, he argued, this approach has deepened the EU’s political, strategic, and economic dependence on the United States.
