Arab Athletics Championships: Algeria to Field Nearly 90 Athletes in Oran

Nearly 90 athletes will represent Algeria at the 24th edition of the Arab Senior Athletics Championships (men’s and women’s), scheduled to take place from April 30 to May 4 at the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Stadium in Oran. This announcement was made by Yacine Louail, president of the Algerian Athletics Federation (FAA), during a press conference held at the headquarters of the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee (COA) in Ben Aknoun, Algiers.

“The aim of the federal authority is to involve as many senior athletes as possible, including those in the under-23 (U23) category. Approximately 90 Algerian athletes will participate in this edition in Oran, and we are counting on certain athletes to secure gold medals in various events,” stated Yacine Louail.

The FAA president noted that “as of yesterday (Tuesday), nine Arab countries have confirmed their participation in the 24th edition in Oran, with registration deadlines still open.” He emphasized that “the organizers expect around 450 athletes representing 22 Arab countries, including Algeria.”

“The Wilayah of Oran has all the necessary amenities for the success of such an event, particularly the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Stadium, which features a track certified by World Athletics, along with modern equipment and lighting systems suitable for hosting these types of sports events,” he emphasized.

“The International Meeting of Oran is set for June 28 during the evening hours (from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM). We anticipate high-quality participation from both African and international athletes,” he added.

The FAA president also discussed the goals of Algerian athletes currently training in Algiers and Bejaia, before entering a training camp abroad from April 5 to April 22.

“We have established medium- and long-term goals, aiming for the best possible performance, with at least one podium finish in the senior Arab Championship. Our athletes will face tough competition, especially from Gulf countries; however, we remain hopeful for strong performances given our athletes’ technical abilities,” concluded Yacine Louail.
