Algeria’s UN Envoy Calls for Decolonization, Reaffirms Support for Western Sahara

Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, delivered a powerful speech before the UN Special Committee on Decolonization, reaffirming Algeria’s steadfast support for just causes and calling for the end of all forms of colonialism.

“Having suffered deeply under colonialism, Algeria stands firmly with peoples seeking self-determination,” Bendjama said, urging the United Nations to take decisive action to eliminate the remaining vestiges of colonialism.

He emphasized that Western Sahara has been on the UN agenda since 1963 as the last non-self-governing territory in Africa. Bendjama reiterated that the Western Sahara issue remains a decolonization matter, with the conflict opposing Morocco and the Polisario Front.

“Despite six decades of discussion at the UN General Assembly, the promised self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people has yet to take place,” he stated.
