Algeria-Russia : Working Meeting to Strengthen Parliamentary Cooperation

ALGIERS – The Algerian chairman of the National Defence Commission, Aissa Naili, chaired, on Tuesday, a working meeting with the Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security, president of the Russia-Algeria parliamentary friendship group at the Federation Council of Russia, Yuri Valyaev, and the accompanying delegation, in the presence of members of the Algeria-Russia friendship group, the Upper House said in a press release.

The meeting enabled to “review various aspects of bilateral cooperation, by emphasizing on boosting parliamentary cooperation and on ways to raise it to match the strong historical relations between Algeria and Russia, in line with the shared vision of the two countries’ leaders,” according to the press release.

In this regard, both sides stressed the importance of “strengthening cooperation, solidarity, and partnership ties between representatives of the Algerian and Russian peoples to foster closer relations through parliamentary diplomatic spaces,” added the same source.

In this respect, Naili reaffirmed “Algeria’s willingness to strengthen parliamentary cooperation with Russia,” emphasizing on “the importance of joint action to implement the Declaration of Deepened Strategic Partnership between the two countries.”

He also highlighted “the importance of joint parliamentary action in defending just causes,” calling for “unifying efforts in regional and international parliamentary forums to counter colonial alliances that mislead Parliaments, leading them to support occupation and its fallacious narratives and to justify its violations of international laws and human rights, as in Palestine and Western Sahara.”

For his part, Valyaev commended “the historical ties uniting the two countries and the level of their cooperation and strategic partnership,” expressing the Russian Parliament’s willingness to “strengthen coordination with the Algerian Parliament through parliamentary diplomacy mechanisms, particularly friendship groups.”

“Several international and regional issues were reviewed by both parties, who agreed to deepen parliamentary relations and strengthen cooperation and partnership between the two countries,” concluded the press release.
