Algeria-Mauritania: Zitouni Meets President El Ghazouani to Strengthen Economic Ties

Algerian Minister of Domestic Trade and National Market Regulation Tayeb Zitouni met with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani on Friday in Nouakchott to discuss ways to deepen economic relations between the two countries.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Palace, brought together senior officials from both sides, including Mauritania’s Minister of Commerce and Tourism Zeinebou Ahmednah, Rabah Fassih from Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, El-Houari Abdelatif from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, and Algeria’s Ambassador to Mauritania, Amine Sid.

Following the meeting, Zitouni said he and President El Ghazouani discussed “the necessity of strengthening Algerian-Mauritanian economic relations.” He also briefed the president on recent exchanges between economic operators from both countries, underlining what he described as a clear will to move bilateral cooperation forward.

According to Zitouni, President El Ghazouani laid out a number of recommendations aimed at “elevating economic relations to match the level of political relations between the two nations.”

Zitouni also highlighted the president’s call to “remove all obstacles hindering the development of economic ties” and to improve coordination between the two trade ministries — particularly in areas like consumer protection, commercial registration, and the creation of strong economic partnerships.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 7th Algerian Products Fair, which runs in Nouakchott from May 22 to 28 and features nearly 200 Algerian companies. Earlier that day, the Algerian-Mauritanian Economic Forum was also held in conjunction with the event.
