Algeria: FM Attaf holds talks with African counterparts

SOCHI (Russia) – The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held bilateral talks on Saturday in Sochi (Russia) with several African counterparts on the sidelines of his participation in the Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, according to a statement from the Ministry.
In this context, FM Attaf met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug; the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Gedion Timotheos; the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Rwanda, Olivier Nduhungirehe; the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Burkina Faso, Jean-Marie Karamoko Traoré; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Benin, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari.
“The meeting between the Minister and his Mauritanian counterpart focused on examining the fraternal and privileged relations between the two brotherly countries, as well as ways to elevate them to higher levels, in accordance with the high directives of the leaders of both countries, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his counterpart, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani,” the statement clarified.
The two sides also discussed several issues on the African Union agenda within the context of Mauritania’s presidency of the continental organisation, the statement added.
The talks with the Ethiopian Foreign Minister focused on “preparations for the next session of the mixed cooperation commission between the two countries and coordination on the upcoming deadlines at the African Union level.”
Discussions between FM Attaf and his Rwandan counterpart focused on “preparations for upcoming bilateral meetings and ways to use these opportunities to strengthen relations between Algeria and Rwanda, in line with the special interest that the Presidents of both countries place on enhancing bilateral cooperation,” the document noted.
The Foreign Minister also consulted with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso regarding “the latest developments in the shared neighbourhood of both countries.”
The two sides also discussed “ways to bring new momentum to the relations between the two countries.”
Additionally, the discussions between Minister Attaf and his Beninese counterpart addressed “ways to promote bilateral cooperation, particularly in the diplomatic sector.” The two ministers also exchanged views and analyses on the situation in the Sahel-Saharan region, the statement concluded.
