30 South Korean Military Officers Investigated Over Yoon’s Failed Martial Law Attempt

A total of 30 South Korean military officers are under investigation for their alleged involvement in President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3, local media reported Wednesday. Authorities have notified 17 generals and 13 field-grade officers of the probe, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Among those being investigated is Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Park An-su, who was appointed as the martial law commander, making him the highest-ranking officer implicated. Other high-ranking officials under scrutiny include five three-star generals, such as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lt. Gen. Jeong Jin-pal and several former military intelligence and special forces commanders. Some officers, including Gen. Park, have already been indicted on charges of insurrection and abuse of power.

Yoon, currently suspended from office since his impeachment by parliament on December 14, remains under criminal investigation for abuse of power and leading an insurrection. He is also subject to a travel ban. The Constitutional Court now has up to six months to decide whether to remove him from office permanently or reinstate him.
