US to Revoke Visas of Chinese Students Amid Increased Scrutiny

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday that the State Department will begin revoking visas for Chinese students, particularly targeting those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in sensitive fields. Rubio stated that, under President Donald Trump’s leadership, the State Department will collaborate with the Department of Homeland Security to implement these stricter measures.

The administration also plans to revise visa criteria to intensify scrutiny of future applications from China and Hong Kong. Earlier this year, thousands of international students faced visa revocations, including some singled out for participating in pro-Palestinian protests or writing opinion pieces critical of the Zionist entity. One affected individual was Turkish PhD student Rumeysa Ozturk from Tufts University.

Last week, the Trump administration moved to revoke Harvard University’s authorization to enroll international students, though a federal judge temporarily blocked this decision. In addition, President Trump proposed capping foreign student admissions at 15%, describing some international students as “troublemakers” and “radical people,” reflecting a broader crackdown on foreign academic presence in the US.
