Türkiye Terminates Additional Tariffs on U.S. Imports Ahead of Erdogan-Trump Meeting

Türkiye has officially lifted additional tariffs imposed on certain U.S. imports in 2018, according to a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on Monday. The move comes just days before President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday.

The tariffs, which had been introduced in retaliation for Washington’s duties on steel and aluminum imports during Trump’s first term, targeted a wide range of American products, including passenger cars, fruit, rice, tobacco, alcoholic beverages, solid fuels, and chemicals. The Turkish Ministry of Trade said the decision to terminate the additional duties followed negotiations with the United States and consultations within the World Trade Organization framework.

Ankara emphasized that reaching a $100 billion bilateral trade volume remains a core objective in its relations with Washington. The ministry added that Türkiye will continue to develop policies aimed at strengthening trade ties while exploring new areas of economic cooperation.
