Spain: Solidarity Initiative Highlights Sahrawi Women’s Struggle

The Sandship Association in the region of Navarre (Spain) announced a solidarity initiative for early February to raise awareness of the Sahrawi women’s struggle and their steadfast defense of their people’s right to freedom and independence.

This solidarity initiative will be organized by the Sandship Association from 2 to 4 February 2026, under the slogan “The Tent Illuminates Humanity,” in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Advancement of Sahrawi Women and the Caja Navarra Foundation.

Constructed from 31 melhfas (the traditional dress worn by Sahrawi women) the open-air exhibition showcases the struggles of women who have championed their people’s dignity, freedom, and right to justice. Those featured range from government ministers and diplomats to human rights activists and artists.

This tent will be open to the public of all ages, including schoolchildren, to communicate and interact with them and also to transmit knowledge to different generations through workshops that will be organized to introduce the customs and traditions of the Sahrawi people.

In a statement to APS, the human rights activist and former detainee Elghalia Djimi said that this solidarity initiative aims to introduce Sahrawi culture and identity, amplify the voices of Sahrawi women to the world, and raise awareness of their struggle for their people’s right to self-determination.

She added that this initiative will serve as an open museum in which visitors can discover stories of struggle showcasing the resilience of Sahrawi women and affirming their steadfast commitment to the fight for decolonization.
