Security Council’s Commitment to Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity of Sudan Reiterated

NEW YORK (United Nations) – The United Nations Security Council approved a press statement on the initiative of the A3+ group, in which it reaffirmed its “strong commitment” to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sudan and expressed “its deep concern” regarding ongoing discussions about establishing “a parallel government authority” in the country.

In the document approved on Wednesday evening in New York at the initiative of the A3+ group (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana), members of the Security Council “expressed their deep concern over the signing of a charter aimed at establishing a parallel government authority in Sudan.”

The SC members further said that “such actions risk exacerbating the ongoing conflict in Sudan, fragmenting the country, and worsening an already disastrous humanitarian situation.”

Moreover, they “reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Sudan,” while stressing that “any unilateral measure that undermines these principles threatens the stability of Sudan and the region as a whole,” according to the text.

In this regard, they called on the conflicting parties to “seek an immediate cessation of hostilities and to engage, in good faith, in political dialogue and diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire.”

Additionally, the UN Council members “welcomed the call by the African Union (AU) and the UN Secretary-General to urgently declare a ceasefire during Ramadan.”
