Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu Arrives in Pyongyang

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu has arrived in Pyongyang, where he is set to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to Russian news agencies TASS and RIA Novosti on Friday.

TASS reported that “Shoigu has arrived in Pyongyang.”

RIA Novosti stated that the former Russian defense minister “will meet with Kim Jong-un, the leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK),” the official name of the nuclear-armed state.

According to TASS, Shoigu began his visit by laying a wreath at the memorial honoring Red Army soldiers who liberated North Korea from Japanese occupation at the end of World War II.

In recent months, North Korea and Russia have strengthened their military cooperation, notably by signing a mutual defense agreement.
