Media Misinformation, Threat Calling for urgent Continental Response in Africa

ALGIERS – President of the African Committee for Intelligence and Security Services (CISSA), Brigadier General Etienne Madama Mahoundi, said on Sunday in Algiers that media misinformation and fake news represent a threat to the stability of African states, calling for an urgent continental response.

In a speech read on his behalf by his representative at the opening of the regional workshop of the CISSA liaison office for North Africa, themed “The Impacts of Fake News and Misinformation on the Security and Stability of States,” held at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center (CIC), Madama Mahoundi said that the impact of misinformation on the national security of African states demands “an urgent continental response,” especially since this phenomenon, amplified by new technologies, is now “transborder.”

Emphasizing that the evolution of new information and communication technologies has transformed the nature of these threats “into a challenge for all security services of African states,” he hoped that the proceedings of this workshop would result in “immediately applicable” recommendations aimed at achieving lasting security and peace on the African continent.

For his part, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security of the African Union (AU), Bankole Adeoye, praised, in a speech read by his representative, Algeria’s leading role in combating terrorism and extremism and its constant commitment to peace and security in Africa.

Oganizing this workshop in Algeria “embodies the great trust that the AU places in this country as a force for regional and continental stability,” he added.
