Lavrov Announces ‘Russia’s Return to Africa’ with Launch of New Department for Partnership

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Africa is a natural ally for Russia in ensuring global justice and equality. He made the comments during the official launch of Russia’s newly established Department for Partnership with Africa. The event, attended by African diplomats, Russian officials, business representatives, and the media, marked a significant step in Russia’s renewed focus on strengthening ties with the continent.

Lavrov emphasized that Russia’s return to Africa is crucial for promoting the principles of justice and equality as outlined in the UN Charter. He explained that past limitations on Russia’s foreign policy activities, such as the weakening of ties due to financial constraints during the Soviet era and the early post-Soviet period, were due to economic difficulties and the pro-Western orientation of Russia’s early leadership.

However, Lavrov acknowledged that the strategic mistake of relying too heavily on Western alliances has been recognized and has served as a valuable lesson for current Russian leaders.

To commemorate this renewed partnership, the Foreign Ministry unveiled a photo documentary exhibition highlighting Russia’s historical and contemporary cooperation with African nations. The exhibition features materials from the Foreign Ministry archives and Russian news agencies, showcasing the development of the African dimension in Russian foreign policy.
