ICRC Warns of Dire Impact from Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure in Sudan

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) expressed grave concern over the escalating attacks in Sudan, which have severely disrupted access to essential services like clean water and electricity for millions. Dorsa Nazemi-Salman, head of ICRC operations in Sudan, called for the protection of critical infrastructure, including power plants and water stations, as they are vital for survival.

The war in Sudan, ongoing since April 2023 between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, has led to massive casualties, displacements, and widespread devastation. The conflict has also targeted essential infrastructure, including recent attacks on dams, oil refineries, and a deadly RSF drone strike on a hospital that killed 70 people.

ICRC warned that disruptions to water and electricity supply are exacerbating the healthcare crisis and increasing the risk of cholera outbreaks. The organization urged all parties to the conflict to protect civilian infrastructure in line with international humanitarian law, warning that failure to do so would deprive civilians of essential services.
