Canada’s New PM Mark Carney Declares End of Close Ties with U.S

Canada’s newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney declared on Thursday that the era of close cooperation with the United States “is over,” citing Washington’s unreliability as a partner.

Speaking at a press conference, Carney stated, “The old relationship we had with the United States, built on deep economic integration and close security and defense cooperation, is over.”

However, he noted that he would hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump “within a day or two” at Washington’s request.

Trump announced on Wednesday his intention to impose a 25% tariff on car imports, adding to previous tariffs on steel and aluminum.

“I reject any attempt to weaken Canada and divide us so that America can take control of us. That will never happen,” Carney asserted.

He further vowed to retaliate against U.S. tariffs with countermeasures designed to have “the maximum impact on the United States while minimizing the impact here in Canada.”
