CAF Women’s AFCON 2024 in 2025: Algeria Aims for Semifinal Spot Against Ghana

The Algerian women’s national football team is preparing for a crucial matchup on Saturday at 5:00 PM against Ghana in the quarter-finals of the 15th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024, which has been postponed to 2025. Their objective is to advance and secure their first-ever place in the tournament’s semifinals.
Having defeated Botswana (1-0) and achieved two strong draws against Tunisia (0-0) and Nigeria (0-0), the Algerians finished second in Group B. This remarkable achievement marks their historic qualification for the knockout stage of AFCON after enduring five consecutive first-round eliminations in 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018.
Guided by coach Farid Benstiti, the team approaches this match with confidence and clarity. “Ghana is gaining momentum in this tournament. They feature athletic players who are technically superior to Botswana and possess explosive acceleration. We must prevent them from using that speed to their advantage. It’s essential that we maintain mental strength in our organization and avoid succumbing to their attacks,” analyzed the national coach.
Reflecting on the “Greens'” performance during the group stage, Benstiti expressed satisfaction with the spirit exhibited by his players. “Qualifying for the quarter-finals is a remarkable achievement; it’s historic. The first round is always challenging. The exceptional team spirit within the group is evident on the field, and I believe we are beginning to establish defensive stability through unwavering solidarity.”
With optimism, the teammates of goalkeeper Chloé N’gazi aspire to write a new chapter in the history of Algerian women’s football.
Ghana, ranked 6th in Africa and 66th globally, is regarded as a powerhouse in continental women’s football. The “Black Queens,” coming off a resounding victory in their last first-round match against Tanzania (4-1), have not reached the semifinals since 2016 and are eager to reconnect with their glorious past. Their athletic prowess, high pressing, and ability to change pace in the final third make them formidable opponents.
