Arkab Stresses Algeria’s Role in Global Climate Action and Emission Reduction

Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, affirmed on Monday that Algeria places special importance on environmental protection and reducing carbon and methane emissions.

This comes as Sonatrach works to limit greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the percentage of burned gas to less than 1% by 2030, along with joining international initiatives such as the “Aiming for Zero Methane” and “Zero Routine Flaring by 2030.”

“Within the framework of valuing our natural resources comprehensively and sustainably, Sonatrach has launched an ambitious project to reforest more than 520,000 hectares over ten years, with a cost exceeding one billion dollars. This project combines carbon storage, promoting local development, and creating job opportunities,” Arkab said in his opening speech on the occasion of Africa & Mediterranean Energy & Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference (NAPEC 2025).

Minister Arkab emphasized that these efforts underscore Algeria’s strong commitment to reducing emissions and promoting the sustainability of the oil and gas industry, in alignment with global climate goals.
