Arab League Welcomes UN Roadmap for Political Settlement in Libya

The Arab League on Sunday welcomed the political roadmap presented by the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya during her briefing to the UN Security Council last Thursday. The plan aims to pave the way toward unifying Libyan institutions and holding presidential and parliamentary elections.
In a statement, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit reaffirmed support for UN efforts to end division and restore stability in Libya, stressing that the proposed roadmap represents “an opportunity that all parties must seize in order to reach a comprehensive political settlement in Libya.”
Aboul Gheit also underlined the importance of continued coordination between the UN mission, Libyan stakeholders, and regional and international partners to ensure the necessary political and technical backing for the implementation of the roadmap. He emphasized that the political process must remain Libyan-owned and Libyan-led.
The Secretary-General further expressed the Arab League’s readiness to assume its responsibility in supporting Libyans, bringing positions closer, and resuming dialogue, while stressing the League’s commitment to safeguarding Libya’s unity, independence, and sovereignty. (APS)
