
ALGIERS, Sept 16, 2025 – Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, met on Tuesday with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who is on an official visit to Algiers, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The visit comes as part of preparations for the upcoming UN Security Council session on Western Sahara in October, during which De Mistura is expected to present a report on his efforts to fulfill his mandate, the statement added.
According to the ministry, Attaf reiterated Algeria’s “full support” for the efforts of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and his envoy to achieve “a just, lasting and final solution” to the Western Sahara question, guaranteeing the Sahrawi people’s “inalienable and imprescriptible right to self-determination” in line with relevant UN resolutions.
The minister also underlined the “central and vital role” of the United Nations, stressing that all initiatives must fall under its aegis and be geared towards launching “direct and unconditional negotiations” between the two parties to the conflict, Morocco and the Polisario Front.
In conclusion, Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to the UN’s decolonization doctrine, hailing the role of MINURSO as a key expression of the international community’s responsibility to complete decolonization in Western Sahara, described as the last colony in Africa.
