Algerian President Reaffirms Support for Palestinian Statehood

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has reiterated Algeria’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian people in their rightful fight for self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with Jerusalem as its capital. He called for accountability from the occupiers for the acts of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed against this population.

This commitment was reaffirmed in a message delivered by President Tebboune on the occasion of International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian People. The message was read on his behalf by Minister of Mujahideen and Rights-holders, Laïd Rebiga, during a ceremony organized on Wednesday in Algiers by the Palestinian embassy in collaboration with the United Nations Representation in Algiers.

The President emphasized Algeria’s consistent support for the Palestinian people’s just struggle to reclaim their right to self-determination and to establish their independent and sovereign state within the borders of June 4, 1967, with El Qods as its capital, in accordance with international legitimacy.

Algeria insists on the “imperative to hold the occupier accountable for the genocidal acts, war crimes, and crimes against humanity he continues to perpetrate against the Palestinian people,” firmly rejecting any desperate attempts to undermine the Palestinian cause through forced exodus or alterations to the historical and legal status of El Qods and all its sacred Muslim and Christian symbols. The President assured that Algeria “will continue, as a member of the Security Council, to uphold its position in perfect alignment with its enduring principles and commitments to the United Nations Charter.”

In his message, the President noted that “this year’s celebration of International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian People comes at a particularly critical time, marked by the brutal aggression of the Israeli occupation against the defenseless Palestinian people, especially in the Gaza Strip. This aggression has now entered its second year amid the appalling international inability to end its horrific consequences, through which the Israeli occupier tramples upon all charters and rules.”

The President warned that “the cost of silence and inaction in the face of the Palestinian tragedy unfolding before us is exorbitant and will only increase in the future.” He explained that “the failure of the international community to impose internationally recognized decisions on the Israeli occupier not only threatens the foundations of an international order established by wise founders and upheld by successive generations but also contributes to the emergence of a chaotic order wholly governed by the logic of force, obliterating any form of justice and rights.”

Additionally, the President called on advocates of just peace to unite their efforts, consolidate their resources, and demonstrate greater determination than ever to “enable the Palestinian people to achieve the reality they aspire to, fully guaranteed by international law and legality—a reality that is inalienable and indefeasible, as decreed by the International Court of Justice in its opinion issued on July 19, 2024, and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution ES-10/24.”

“While the world widely supports a two-state solution, the only viable option is to admit Palestine as a full member state of the United Nations and to take decisive action to permanently obstruct extremists who deny Palestinians their fundamental existential and national rights,” the Algerian President added.
