Algeria/United Nations: Signing of a Cooperation Agreement to Support Energy Efficiency and Innovation

Algiers, July 24, 2024 – The National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalisation of Energy Use has signed a cooperation agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Algeria to launch a project aimed at supporting energy efficiency and innovation for sustainable transition in Algeria.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday by the Director General of the agency, Marouane Chaban, and the Acting Resident Representative of UNDP in Algeria, Francesca Nardini, in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad and the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

According to the agency, this “strategic partnership” aims to enhance innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of energy efficiency, support the reform of the regulatory framework related to energy efficiency in the housing sector, develop the use of green hydrogen as an alternative energy source to reduce the carbon footprint in the industrial sector, and foster clean and sustainable transportation.

In a statement from UNDP Algeria, Ms. Nardini praised “Algeria’s efforts and determination to promote a new prosperous and resilient model of sustainable energy,” highlighting that the topic of energy transformation is considered “pivotal” to sustainable development of countries.

The same source affirmed that the implementation of this “ambitious” project is a result of the “close” cooperation between the National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalisation of Energy Use, UNDP Algeria, and UNDP Centre For Climate Action And Energy Transition, to support the objectives of Algeria’s energy policy.
