Algeria, Mauritania Reaffirm Commitment to Deepen Economic Cooperation

Algeria and Mauritania on Friday reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral economic ties, underscoring a shared political will to raise cooperation to a more effective level.

The pledge came during a meeting in Nouakchott between Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and Algerian Minister of Internal Trade and National Market Regulation Tayeb Zitouni, as part of a visit initiated by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

At the start of the meeting, Zitouni conveyed greetings and well wishes from President Tebboune to his Mauritanian counterpart, expressing hopes for continued prosperity and success for the Mauritanian people.

President Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, in turn, asked Zitouni to pass along his fraternal greetings to Tebboune and voiced pride in the “strategic and privileged” relationship between the two neighboring nations.

Talks focused on boosting economic ties, in line with the countries’ broader efforts to expand cooperation across sectors. According to Zitouni, the meeting also provided an opportunity to brief the Mauritanian leader on the objectives of his visit, which coincided with the 7th Algerian Products Fair in Nouakchott.

The fair, running from May 22 to 28, features 219 Algerian companies representing various sectors of the Algerian economy.

Zitouni noted that bilateral meetings between government ministries and business leaders had yielded positive outcomes, demonstrating a strong desire to advance trade, investment, and economic collaboration.

He added that President Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani expressed hopes that economic relations would match the level of political ties between the two countries. Both sides, he said, agreed on the need to develop strategic projects and enhance coordination in areas such as consumer protection, commercial registry systems, and joint ventures aimed at creating jobs and generating wealth for both peoples.
