African Coordination Through African and UN Security Councils on the Agenda of the “Oran Process”

The second day of the 11th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, held in Oran, Algeria, saw an intensive closed-door session focusing on strengthening coordination between the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) and the A3 group of African UN Security Council members.

This session aimed to ensure Africa’s priorities are effectively represented within the global body, underscoring the continent’s collective effort toward global influence. Key participants included Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, African officials, and representatives from the UN and international partners, demonstrating the seminar’s significance in shaping African diplomacy.

The agenda emphasized the operationalization of the Oran Process, a strategic mechanism designed to enhance African collaboration in peace and security matters. Discussions also revisited the outcomes of the ministerial meeting of A3+ members, providing a roadmap for harmonizing actions between the PSC and African representatives at the UN Security Council.

An operational guide for interaction mechanisms between these entities was also presented, reinforcing Algeria’s commitment to driving African-led solutions to the continent’s challenges.

Building on the outcomes of Day 1, which addressed integrated capacities to combat terrorism and reforms to the UN Security Council, Day 2 deepened strategic dialogue and collaboration.

The seminar reaffirmed Algeria’s pivotal role as a host and advocate for African priorities, leveraging its position as a non-permanent UN Security Council member. With themes reflecting Africa’s determination to amplify its voice, the seminar solidified Algeria’s stance as a unifier and steadfast ally in advancing a cohesive and empowered African bloc on the global stage.
