Yemen: 85% of Displaced Families Lack Daily Food (UN)

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported that 84% of Yemeni families are displaced, with many experiencing multiple displacements. Alarmingly, 85% of these families cannot meet their daily food needs, forcing parents to ration meals to ensure their children eat each day. The UN urgently calls for increased humanitarian assistance to address Yemen’s children’s pressing needs.

Marin Din Kajdomcaj, a representative of the UN agency in Yemen, stated that “this is the harsh reality for countless families across Yemen”. He pointed out that over 51% of families have at least one child without a birth certificate, while 70% lack national identity cards.

The UN agency underscored the critical need to address the protective requirements of communities grappling with food insecurity. Nearly every family has at least one member at risk, including women, children, and individuals with disabilities.

In response to the escalating needs, the agency is intensifying its cash assistance programs. These programs are described as a cornerstone of support for the most vulnerable families. They include providing cash aid to meet basic necessities, manage crises, obtain identity cards, and rehabilitate homes.
