Western Sahara: Belgium Reaffirms Full Support for the UN Political Process

BRUSSELS, January 31, 2025 – Belgium’s Foreign Minister, Bernard Quintin, has reaffirmed his country’s unwavering support for the United Nations-led political process aimed at achieving a fair, sustainable, and mutually acceptable solution for Western Sahara, which is currently under Moroccan occupation.
“The current Belgian government’s stance on Western Sahara is well-established and was previously articulated by my predecessor in 2022, as well as by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. Belgium fully endorses the UN process to secure a just, lasting, and mutually agreeable political resolution involving all parties,” stated Minister Quintin during a press conference on Thursday.
Moreover, Quintin highlighted the unique role of the UN in this political endeavor, reiterating Brussels’ backing for “UN Security Council Resolution 2703, which acknowledges the roles and responsibilities of the involved parties in pursuing a realistic, pragmatic, sustainable, and compromise-based political solution.”
The UN classifies Western Sahara as a non-autonomous territory, with its final status to be determined through a referendum organized by the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
