Trump Announces Deal with Mexican President to Halt Migration

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that Mexico, under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, has agreed to curb migration flows into the United States. The statement follows Trump’s recent threats to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China over fentanyl trafficking and migration issues.
Trump described his conversation with Sheinbaum as “productive,” asserting that Mexico would “effectively close our Southern Border” and take steps to reduce drug inflows. In response, Sheinbaum confirmed the dialogue, emphasizing Mexico’s human-rights-based approach to managing migration and rejecting the notion of border closures, instead advocating for collaborative efforts between nations.
Trump also reiterated plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico upon taking office in January, framing the move as part of his broader strategy to address what he calls the “illegal invasion” and drug crisis affecting the U.S.
