US Faces Widespread Condemnation for Vetoing Gaza Ceasefire Resolution

The United States has come under intense criticism for vetoing a draft UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution that called for a ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, drafted by ten non-permanent council members, sought an immediate and unconditional end to hostilities in Gaza and the release of captives. Although 14 of the 15 council members supported the resolution, it was blocked by the U.S., a permanent member with veto power. Many voices condemned the veto as an endorsement of what they describe as the ongoing “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians by Zionist forces.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) echoed these criticisms, accusing the U.S. of violating international law and emboldening Zionist aggression. PA statements highlighted that this marked the fourth U.S. veto of such resolutions, reflecting Washington’s disregard for UN rulings and the International Court of Justice’s calls to end the occupation. Palestinian officials, including UN Deputy Permanent Observer Majed Bamya, denounced the veto as unjustifiable, asserting that it effectively supports continued violence against Palestinians.
International reactions were similarly scathing. Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia and China’s envoy Fu Cong criticized the U.S., with Nebenzia holding it accountable for civilian casualties in Gaza, while Fu stated that history would remember this veto as a betrayal of Palestinian hopes. The widespread denunciation underscores global frustration with Washington’s unwavering support for the Zionist entity amid ongoing aggression and humanitarian crises in Gaza.
