Thailand and Cambodia Agree On a Border Ceasefire (Media)

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed on preliminary conditions for a ceasefire in the conflict zone along their shared border, which is set to take effect on December 27, Thailand’s public broadcaster Thai PBS reported, citing a source close to the secretariat of the General Border Committee of the two countries.

According to the source, the ceasefire will initially be implemented for a period of 72 hours. During this time, a mechanism to monitor compliance will be put in place, while any subsequent agreement must be approved by Thailand’s National Security Council.

The broadcaster noted that negotiations conducted within this framework, at the secretariat level, concluded with the adoption of a draft agreement.

Thailand’s Ministry of Defense had previously announced that a high-level meeting of the Thai-Cambodian border committee, dedicated to establishing a ceasefire, would be held on December 27.

For their part, countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) welcomed the opening of discussions aimed at establishing a ceasefire in the border conflict zone between Thailand and Cambodia.

Clashes along the border between the two countries, involving light weapons, began on December 7.

On December 8, Thai ground forces stated that the Cambodian army had carried out artillery fire against Thai positions in the border area.

In retaliation, the Thai air force conducted strikes against Cambodian military infrastructure.
